THE LLANDDONA TRANSMITTER is the UHF and BBC FM main station that serves the Isle of Anglesey and parts of the North and North-West Wales coastline. It is sited on Anglesey, close to the island's north-eastern coast. The station first came into operation in January 1958 as a BBC 405-line television transmitter, broadcasting on VHF Channel 1. The first regular UHF transmissions were BBC2 from 3 June 1967 with BBC1 and ITV following much later in 1973. At a height of 106.7m (350.6ft), the mast is the shortest of those present across the six main UHF transmitters in Wales. Somewhat ironically, it is the parent station of the UHF relay at Arfon, which features the tallest mast in Wales. |
