THE LLANDDONA TRANSMITTER is the UHF and BBC FM main station that serves the Isle of Anglesey and parts of the North and North-West Wales coastline.  It is sited on Anglesey, close to the island's north-eastern coast.

The station came into operation on 22 December 1958 as an extension to the BBC National FM radio transmitter network, two days after the BBC opened the Llangollen VHF station in North East Wales.

Together with the Blaenplwyf transmitter, these stations formed a collaborative network that provided the main BBC National FM coverage across the populated coastal belt of North and North West Wales.

From 22 May 1962, Llanddona commenced transmission of BBC 405-line Band I Television on VHF Channel 1 (V).  In this capacity, it was classed as a relay station with an Effective Radiated Power (e.r.p) of 6kW.

The FM service preceding the start of Band I television was relatively unusual, although this same chronology occurred also at Blaenplwyf, albeit within a shorter time-frame and in different circumstances.

For the purpose of UHF transmission, Llanddona became a main station with BBC2 the first regular service from 3 June 1967, with BBC1 and ITV following much later in 1973.

At a height of 106.7m (350.6ft), the mast is the shortest of those present across the six main UHF transmitters in Wales and is the parent station of the UHF relay at Arfon, which features the tallest mast in Wales.

It is understood that Llanddona ceased 405-line transmission during 1984, quite possibly at the same time as the closure at Arfon which took place at the beginning of January 1984.
