Hello and Welcome ! |
|
This site is about broadcast transmitting stations in the United Kingdom, focusing primarily on the main television transmitter sites (both past and present) and those forming part of the high power VHF radio transmitter network. For many, the flagships of this network are the Crystal Palace transmitting station in London and the Emley Moor transmitter in Yorkshire, with their iconic status and unique tower-design transmission structures being the primary influences in the naming of this site. The vast majority of high-power transmitting stations are however supported by stayed-masts of varying height or design, giving many of these stations their own unique characteristics which as far as possible are reflected within the images featured here. The commentary provided on every page is also intended to focus on the notable characteristics of each station featured with appropriate emphasis according to its particular attributes. Screen Resolution/Image Size Description This site was originally designed in the pre-widescreen monitor era based on the 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 screen resolutions which is why these values have been referred to where images are provided in more than one size. However, for image size guidance purposes, these values have become increasingly irrelevant as more and more users have upgraded to widescreen monitors or tablets. So starting with the pages added or updated in January 2014, images in multiple sizes are now referred to by pixel size rather than resolution, with all other pages following suit in due course. UHF Coverage Maps Any information given in relation to UHF coverage, included maps, should be regarded as 'best estimate' rather than 'definitive' as even the transmission providers cannot with absolute accuracy determine the precise service area of any transmitter, even in normal atmospheric conditions. The best knowledge of coverage in any given area tends to come locally from aerial dealers and viewer experience. So this is just something to bear in mind. Mast/Tower Heights Information gathered on the height of structures has a tendency to vary slightly, even from official sources such as the transmission providers. Furthermore, in the case of UHF transmitter sites, height information these sources provide may or may not include the UHF antenna which generally surmounts the main structure. For the purposes of this site, the most reliable and consistent information is used and where available the height including or not-including any surmounting UHF antennas is specifically stated. Feedback Any feedback on this site, both positive and negative, is welcomed so please contact here. |
