THE CARMEL TRANSMITTER is the UHF main station that serves the county of Carmarthenshire in South Wales.

It is located approximately ten miles south-east of Carmarthen and from here it also serves some parts of Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Ceredigion.

The station is one of the six long-standing UHF main transmitter bases in Wales but unlike the other five sites (Blaenplwyf, Llanddona, Moel-y-Parc, Presely and Wenvoe) it was a new-build UHF facility as there was no requirement for a 405-line main station in this area.

However, the station was commissioned when Carmarthenshire was identified as one of those areas that would fall outside the coverage range of UHF transmitters operating from the existing VHF sites, in this instance those based at Wenvoe and Presely
