THE DARVEL TRANSMITTER is the UHF main station and FM and DAB radio service provider for the county of Ayrshire in South-West Scotland.

It is the most southerly UHF main station within the 'STV Central' service area, however, geographically is not the most southerly UHF main station in Scotland.  The latter status is held by the Selkirk transmitter but this carries ITV Border.

Within the STV Central area, Darvel shares main UHF transmitter status with the stations at Black Hill, Craigkelly and Torosay (Argyll and Bute).

The 'Transmitter Group' status created by Digital Switchover covers these transmitters and also the relay station at Rosneath.

TRANSMISSION STRUCTURE

The Darvel mast is a 152.4 metre (500-ft) square-cross-section lattice stayed structure, with a surmounting UHF main antenna.

Twelve stay lines hold the structure in place which descend to ground in three directions to inner and outer stay blocks, with every block securing two lines.

STATION HISTORY

Darvel was built by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) in order to provide a UHF-Colour service to Ayrshire from 1972.

The authority's Black Hill transmitter provided the 405-line VHF service to the area, enhanced from 31 January 1969 with the opening of the relay at Lethanhill, near Ayr.  Meanwhile, the BBC provided their VHF service from the Kirk O'Shotts transmitter.

However, a high-power UHF station for Ayrshire was stipulated when tests ascertained that Black Hill (the designated UHF-Colour main station for the central belt of Scotland) would typically be unable to replicate its VHF coverage range on UHF, consequently leaving much of Ayrshire unserved.

The opening of Darvel was followed in March 1973 by its first relay, installed at the site of the Black Hill VHF relay station at Lethanhill (as indicated on the UHF Coverage Map from 1974).
