Tacolneston TimeLine

17 January 1955

Commencement of regular trade test transmission from the new Tacolneston transmitter, which operates provisionally from a temporary 260ft mast and transmitters housed in a 30ft x 12ft wooden hut.

Output is initially limited to an Effective Radiated Power (e.r.p) of 500w/125w (vision/sound respectively - adhering to standard 4:1 ratio).

1 February 1955

Tacolneston enters regular programme service.

8 October 1956

The permanent transmitting station and 500ft mast opens, replacing the temporary facilities.  The station is now capable of delivering a maximum vision e.r.p of 45kW.  However, the increase in power is subject to phased implementation in order to monitor potential co-channel interference on the continent and within the service area of the Rowridge transmitter, which also uses Channel 3.

The intended launch of the BBC FM service from the same date is deferred due to delay in delivery of the Band II aerial system.
