THE HEATHFIELD TRANSMITTER is the UHF main station that serves most of East Sussex and bordering parts of Kent. It is one of three long-established south-east region UHF main stations (along with Bluebell Hill and Dover) and one of four 'primary stations' as defined by the 'Transmitter Groups' created by Digital Switchover, which adds the Tunbridge Wells transmitter to the group. The station also carries regional FM radio services and both national and regional DAB multiplexes. BBC National FM is not carried from this site as these services are broadcast to the area from the Wrotham transmitter. Heathfield was originally opened by the BBC as a new-build site for the UHF transmitter network, initially broadcasting BBC2 only from 17 October 1970 with BBC1 and ITV following in November 1971. ANALOGUE UHF CHANNEL ALLOCATION |
In common with the south-coast area UHF main stations at Hannington, Midhurst, Dover and Bluebell Hill, the UHF analogue channel allocation at Heathfield (49-52-64-67) was a non-standard grouping. The reason for this was the proximity of these stations to mainland Europe and is explained in more detail on the Hannington page. DIGITAL SWITCHOVER |
Heathfield completed Digital Switchover (DSO) on 13 June 2012 with the allocated UHF channels placing the transmitter within Group B (Channels 35-53) for receiving aerials, having originally been Group C/D (Channels 48-68) for analogue and later wideband Group W (Channels 21-68) for analogue/original digital multiplexes combined. |
