THE BROUGHER MOUNTAIN TRANSMITTER in County Fermanagh is one of three UHF main stations in Northern Ireland and broadcasts to the south west of the province. Serving parts of County Tyrone as well as Fermanagh, the main towns within coverage are Enniskillen and Omagh, but with proximity to the Irish Republic, the signal is known to cross the border where viewers have long-used the transmitter to receive programmes from the UK. The eastern and central parts of Northern Ireland are covered by the Divis transmitter and its dependent relays whilst the Limavady station covers the north and north west. Transmissions from Brougher Mountain are dispersed across three structures as follows - |
(1) MAIN TOWER - Transmits all FM radio except as per (3) below and all DAB radio. Also has the reserve UHF aerial at the top |
(Originally the sole transmitting structure prior to Digital Switchover) |
(2) SECOND TOWER - Transmits main UHF service post-Digital Switchover |
(Previously a shorter square 'stump' tower carrying non-broadcast installations but extended in height in 2010 for its current purpose) |
(3) STAYED MAST - Transmits Q Tyrone & Fermanagh |
(Sited outside the main compound by the access road) |

STATION HISTORY |
Brougher Mountain commenced service on 24 February 1964 as a relay of the Divis main station, rebroadcasting both BBC 405-line VHF Band I television and BBC National Radio on FM VHF Band II. The 405-line transmission was on VHF Channel 5(H) whilst the original frequencies for FM Band II were 93.3MHz (Home Service), 88.9MHz (Light Programme) and 91.1MHz (Third Programme). Coverage from the station complemented that provided from both Divis and the Londonderry relay station. Finally joining the UHF transmitter network in 1978, Brougher Mountain was the last of the original four-channel analogue UHF main stations in the UK to enter service. |
