THE MANNINGTREE TRANSMITTER is the main carrier of BBC National FM and DAB radio across Suffolk and parts of North Essex, as well as some regional services on Medium Wave. Located near the North Essex coastline on a ground height of 36 metres (118-ft) above sea level, it is the lowest elevated main transmission site in the UK. (Holme Moss is the highest at 524 metres/1719-ft above sea level). It is also one of four main UHF/VHF transmission facilities of BBC origin located across East Anglia, the transmitters sited at Peterborough and Tacolneston combining with Manningtree to complete the main BBC FM radio coverage across the region. The relatively-adjacent transmitter at Sudbury is the fourth station and provides UHF coverage across the Manningtree VHF service area. The transmission mast at Manningtree is 154.4 metres (507-ft) high with a lattice square cross section design, held in position by twelve stay lines attaching to six ground anchoring blocks. |

STATION HISTORY |
|
Manningtree was opened by the BBC on 22 May 1962 and built to provide both improved BBC 405-line television and BBC FM radio coverage across the Suffolk and North Essex area where reception of the Tacolneston transmitter was inadequate. The station was one of several opened in 1962 that utilised advances in technology to allow fully automated and mostly unattended operation. Being slightly mis-placed geographically to provide effective UHF coverage across Suffolk and North Essex without causing interference in Europe, Manningtree was superceded for this purpose in 1968 by the newly-built Sudbury transmitter, sited barely ten miles to the north-west. The 405-line television transmissions (on VHF Channel 4) remained in operation until the national closure of the 405-line network in January 1985. |
